The nudge…
Did ‘they’ ever think for one moment when considering those wonderful ideas to avert being hit by an asteroid from space….
1. It would be a simple mathematical calculation to determine if when an asteroid comes closer and closer to a trajectory that would bring it into contact with earth, whether it had been nudged somewhere out of our sight…...by someone else
2. Did they ever think that when or if we were to hit an oncoming asteroid with a nuclear bomb, or some other form of enticement to make it change trajectory to save ourselves….and if there was any other form of life out in space and they noticed an asteroid that returned every 100 years, passing in their view, had suddenly changed trajectory, or not returned, it would also be a simple mathematical calculation for them to determine when, and where in space the alteration to its course of travel occurred….and they would know they were not alone....and also....where their neighbor lives....
3. Did they ever think that one of the most frightening occurrences that I can imagine happening in my life time, is the realization that an asteroid that we have been watching, tracking, etc., did not return when it was supposed to….you know, one that returned every twenty years, suddenly did not....
4. I am going to start a short story about that idea….the story starts out with an intern, arms full of papers, running down a hallway at the Space Research Laboratory in Florida, and arriving out of breath through the doors of a upper echelon meeting of the minds…to announce…”Sir’s we are missing one of our deep space objects….asteroid ‘4567990’ was supposed to come into our view two years ago, and no one realized it did not! That is to say, something out in deep space has stopped an asteroid that we have been tracking for 80 years, from returning…! Whereas the panic starts to locate the missing rock...perhaps someone out in deep space gave it a nudge, changed its trajectory, to save themselves.....to be continued. RJ
